Nowadays it’s rare that I’m blown away seeing a grill I’ve never seen before for the first time.

Don’t get me wrong – I appreciate the expert level of craftsmanship that most high-end grill manufacturers put into their products.

It’s just not every day that I come across a truly unique product that makes me feel like I’ve discovered something different.

But that’s exactly what happened when I saw an Arteflame grill for the first time.  These grills deliver an elite cooking experience – plus they’re just flat-out cool and create an unbeatable ambiance in any outdoor kitchen.

My encounter led me to create this complete Arteflame review for anybody who might be interested or on the fence about picking one up.  So read on to learn more about a fire pit grill and what makes them so special!

Arteflame Brand Overview

Arteflame is an American brand that manufactures all of its products in the USA.  The founders felt that most grills were not aesthetically pleasing – and rarely, if ever, ended up as a centerpiece where people would gather around to create and share memories.

So they wanted to create a product that knocked it out of the park with function, form, and style – a grill that could cook spectacular food but would also draw people in.

They created their flagship product, the Arteflame Classic 40″ Grill, out of that vision.  It’s a grill that almost looks like a piece of art – and best of all it can cook incredible food while people gather around to watch the show.

What Are Arteflame Grills Exactly?

In a nutshell, Arteflame Grills are high end, standalone flat top grills that are designed to be the center of your outdoor parties and get togethers.

Aesthetically, the grills present elevated, contemporary, and sleek centerpieces to your outdoor space.

Functionally, the grills work as a wood or charcoal fired flat top grill.  A centrally located fire pit is the heat source for a circular cooking surface that surrounds the cooking fire pit.  The cooking surface can also be removed and the unit can be enjoyed simply as a fire pit.

While the ultimate prize is a full size Arteflame Grill, they also offer a few accessories that allow for you to have a taste of the Arteflame experience at a more budget friendly price point.

Specifically, they offer carbon steel grill inserts that fit inside a Weber Kettle or a Kamado-style grill (such as a Big Green Egg or a Kamado Joe).  These inserts just pop right in to replace your grill’s cooking grate and feature a quality flat top surface around the circumference – with a traditional grill grate in the center.

The best way to illustrate how great Arteflame Grills are is to dive into their flagship Classic 40″ tall base grill for a look at its features and how it performs.

For starters, the unit is 38″ tall – the bottom of the base has a 20″ diameter and the top of the base, where the cooking surface is set, has a 40″ diameter.

The fire bowl is a single piece of Cor-ten steel, so there are no seams or weld marks.  Cor-ten steel is a special type of weathering steel that has increased resistance to corrosion compared to other steel.  That means repeated exposure to rain, snow, and ice won’t affect the quality of your fire bowl.

To get the grill going, you build your fire in the center of the grill – with either wood or charcoal or both – and this fire serves as the energy source to heat your flat top cooking surface.

Essentially, the fire in the centerfire bowl heats your cooking surface to the ideal cooking temperature.  What’s really cool about this configuration is that naturally, the inside of the ring gets much hotter than the outside of the ring, which means you can simultaneously cook different types of foods at their ideal temperatures.

The cooktop is made of 1/2″ carbon steel, which is generally considered to be a superior cooking surface to cast iron.  The inside of the cooktop can reach upwards of 500ºF with a large enough fire, ideal for searing steaks, burgers, and much more.  The outside of the cooktop reaches about 250ºF, ideal for peppers, veggies, or simply to keep already cooked food warm before it’s served.

It’s hard to overstate just how good looking of a grill this is – it truly looks like a piece of art in person and creates a unique ambiance for any outdoor setup.  In addition to the Classic 40″ version, Arteflame offers a few other tall base configurations that present a slightly different aesthetic – namely a Euro base and a classic base with built-in storage.

Euro Base:

Classic Base with Storage:

Furthermore, they offer the classic and euro styles in a low base configuration, which is only 18″ tall compared to the 38″ tall standard base.  The low base options still have a 40″ diameter cooking surface.

Last but not least they offer a fire bowl only set up, which is ideal if you plan to install a custom built-in flat top grill configuration.  The bowl-only version can be set into various styles of outdoor pits or sturdy countertops to complete your outdoor kitchen.

Getting the Most Out of Your Arteflame Grill

Accessories

Arteflame has developed quite the suite of well thought out accessories to compliment their already incredibly functional grills.  Here’s a quick look at some of our favorite add ons:

Food Saver

If you ever plan to load up your grill or cook foods that can roll around (like hot dogs), the food saver is almost a must.  This stainless steel insert fits to the outside of the center ring and creates a little blockade to prevent your food from falling into the fire.

Center Grill Grate

The center of your Arteflame grill – where your fire is built – is left uncovered by default.  However, you can cover the center space over your fire with a carbon steel grill grate if you want to utilize the center area of the cooker.

The center grill grate sits flush with the flat top cooking surface and makes it easy to get beautiful grill marks on your food.  Not to mention, food from the grate is sure to pick up some incredible smoky flavor as it cooks directly over your fire.

Bottom line, the center grill grate is a nice way to add versatility and significantly more cooking surface area to your set up.

Grill Grate Riser

The Arteflame grill grate riser is designed to work in tandem with the center grill grate attachment.  Instead of setting your grate flush with the flat top cooking surface, the grate riser lifts your grate about 9″ above the cooking surface.

This adds functionality in a couple of ways.  First, it allows for you to place a cast iron pan directly on the center grate without smothering your fire.  Second, it serves as a lower heat zone to set food that you want to cook a little slower and pick up extra smokey flavor.

Rotisserie Kit

Everybody loves a good rotisserie set up, but the problem is most are a pain to deal with.  Arteflame’s rotisserie kit is designed to be as straightforward as possible to use.

The kit fits perfectly into the center of an Arteflame grill with a simple squeeze and release system.  That’s all it takes to be well on your way to delicious rotisserie chicken, turkey, and much more.

Pizza Oven

If you’re the type who enjoys a good Neapolitan style pizza, the pizza oven kit provides an excellent way to make ’em right there on your grill.

The kit is designed to sit over the center of the grill, which creates a cooking chamber that’s well ventilated and perfect for cooking some spectacular pizzas over the wood fire.

The best part is that once your pizzas are done in the oven, all you have to do is pull them out and set them right there on the Arteflame’s cooktop where they can be sliced and stay warm until you’re ready to grab a slice.

Grill Scraper

A grill scraper is a versatile tool in the pit master arsenal.  When it comes to Arteflame grills, the grill scraper serves two main functions.  It allows you to corral foods that you are cooking on the flat top surface, like veggies.

The grill scraper is also the perfect no fuss tool to clean your cooktop quickly.  Simply scrape your food bits and excess oils into the fire pit and boom, you’re ready to go for your next cook.

Arteflame Insert for Weber Kettle and Kamado Grills

If you’re interested in the Arteflame cooking style – that is, flat top grill cooking over a charcoal or wood fire – but don’t need a full sized grill, the inserts are an excellent alternative.

These inserts are a carbon steel cooking surface, with a flat top surface around the outside and grill grates over the center.  The Weber Kettle insert is obviously designed to fit all sizes of Weber’s Kettle grill, and the Kamado insert is designed to fit the most popular Kamado grill brands like Kamado Joe or Big Green Egg.

Caring For Your Arteflame Grill

First and foremost, it’s worth reemphasizing here that Arteflame grills are incredibly durable.  In fact, they’re designed to be able to be left outdoors, uncovered, in any kind of weather, and still perform well for years.

But with that being said, at Own the Grill we are big proponents of grill care, so we’d still recommend covering your Arteflame just to make sure it stays in tip top shape (Arteflame sells grill covers that fit each of their products).

You’ll also need to be prepared to season your cooking surface as it will arrive unseasoned.  The purpose of seasoning the cooktop is to remove any leftover residue from the manufacturing process, but also to form a natural non-stick cooking surface that will make your Arteflame more durable and easy to cook on.  Here’s a resource Arteflame created which walks through the process of seasoning their grills:

Last but not least, it’s important to give your grill a quick clean at the end of each cook.  We mentioned already that a grill scraper helps immensely for this – all you really need to do is scrape any food bits and oil into the center fire pit.  If you want to re-season your cooktop, do so by giving it a light wipe with a rag that has been dipped in your griddle cooking oil of choice.

From there, scoop out the ashes (after they have completely cooled!!) and dispose.  You can reuse charcoal or wood that has not burned.

Arteflame Review – Final Thoughts

At the end of the day, Arteflame grills might not be for everybody – they aren’t exactly budget grills and you need to have some patio space to dedicate to your cooker.

But those who dive in to the Artiflame family are handsomely rewarded with a grill that not only will cook tasty food time after time.  They’re rewarded with a bona fide centerpiece to any outdoor cooking set up that will make people gather around for memorable cookouts time and time again.

We hope you’ve found this Arteflame grill review to be helpful!  Let us know if you’ve come across one before and what your experience was – we love to gather feedback and are constantly trying to improve the quality of our content!

Grills and fire pits are two items that are almost guaranteed to elevate the ambiance of any outdoor patio setup.  Each is designed for people to gather around for memorable moments outdoors – but generally speaking, they are two completely different things.

However, in recent years some clever manufacturers in the outdoor lifestyle space had the bright idea of combining the two.  A few of these manufacturers executed the fire pit grill to perfection – and they’re epic centerpieces that just have a special way of bringing people together.

We’ve created this list of the best cooking fire pit (or fire pit grill combos) to help get you started with your search!  We’ll highlight some of our favorite options on the market and also highlight some of the features you should consider when deciding which pit is best for you.

When it comes to all around performance, durability, and aesthetics – the Arteflame Contemporary Fire Pit Grill is hard to beat.  That’s why gets our pick as the best cooking fire pit currently on the market.

Arteflame grills almost look like they’re pieces of art – and they’re designed to draw people in to gather and enjoy excellent food.  The cooker comes in a few different configurations; the flagship grill comes with a tabletop height cabinet, but you can also opt for a shorter base cabinet or a built-in configuration.

The fire bowl (where your charcoal or wood fire is built) is made of corten steel, which is a special type of corrosion resistant metal.  The round cooking surface is made of high quality 1/2″ carbon steel, which is considered to be a superior cooking surface to cast iron, generally speaking.

The diameter of the cooking surface is 40″, and is suited to cook everything from the largest ribeye steaks to veggies and sides.  The inside of the ring (closest to the fire) reaches 500ºF and above to get that perfect sear, while the outside of the cooktop usually reaches 250ºF – which is ideal for peppers, veggies, or just to keep food warm before serving.  Of course, you can make the cooktop temperature hotter or cooler than this by adjusting the size of your fire.

Arteflame also knocks it out of the park in the accessories department – there are more than a handful of add-ons to choose from to elevate your cooking experience:

  • Center grill grate (for cooking directly over your fire)
  • Grill grate riser (lifts center grill grate 9″ above the cooking surface)
  • Food saver (prevents food from falling into the centerfire)
  • Rotisserie kit
  • Pizza oven
  • Various clean up accessories

The downside to the Arteflame is the price point – it’s on the more expensive side of the spectrum for sure.  However, if you have the coin to pick one up, you won’t be disappointed.

Check out our full Arteflame review here for more on this high-end brand!

Cast Master Bon 2000 Bonfire Pit

If you’re looking for a cheaper or more portable option, the Cast Master Bon 2000 Dual Purpose Bonefire Pit is an excellent choice.  At only 32 pounds and with a carrying case included, it’s easy to take with you on the go for a camping trip or tailgate before the game.

The unit is constructed of stainless steel and does an outstanding job of channeling heat to deliver a hot fire that you can gather around to keep warm or cook some burgers.  The Bon 2000 is actually designed to be a smokeless fire pit, which may be a positive or a negative depending on your preferences when it comes to cooking and enjoying fireside warmth.

However, you can load lump charcoal or briquettes into the charcoal grate and you’ll still get some smokey flavor.  You likely will not get much smoke flavor in this pit from traditional hardwoods like oak, hickory, etc.

A cooking grate is included that sits perfectly on top of the firepit where you can cook your food.  The grate has a 19″ diameter, which translates to about 283 square inches of cooking surface area to work with.  It’s enough space to comfortably fit 4 large burgers at once or potentially 6-8 smaller ones.

Breeo X Series Smokeless Fire Pit

The Breeo X Series Smokeless Fire Pit is another option that is primarily marketed as a smokeless fire pit, but can easily be converted into a cooking fire pit with a few extra attachments.

Namely, Breeo developed the Outpost Grill attachment – which is an adjustable height grate attachment that allows you to cook directly over your pit.  It comes with a carry bag and is completely adjustable, so you can use it over a campfire in addition to the smokeless pit.

The Breeo X Series comes in a few different sizes – there’s a 19″, 24″, and 30″ option.  For the 19″ version, the only way to convert it into a fire pit grill combo is via the Outpost attachment.

But for the 24″ and 30″ options, you can actually choose to add on a SearPlate rim, which gives you the ability to sear steaks, burgers, and more on the outer rim of the fire pit.  Functionally, the SearPlate works similarly to the way the Arteflame grill works – this is just a smaller and less expensive option.

Bali Outdoors Wood Fire Pit

Our budget pick for the best fire pit grill goes to the Bali Outdoors Fire Pit – it’s one of the least expensive options on our list.  Even though it’s cheap, it provides a reasonable amount of performance in the cooking department.

The grill grate is elevated from the rest of the pit, but you can adjust the height by a few inches depending on how hot you need your grate to be.  Also, the grate swivels 360º – which comes in handy if you ever need to let a steak rest at a warm temperature after searing.

You’re afforded roughly 270 square inches of cooking surface area on the 18.7″ diameter grill grate, so it’s an ideal size to cook for 2-4 people.  Any more than that you’ll probably need to cook in multiple batches.

This fire pit only weighs 27 pounds, so its quite possible to take it with you on the go, but it doesn’t break down into a more compact size for travel.  Four legs fixed on a circular steel ring provide sturdy footing no matter where or on what surface you choose to place your pit on.

Best Cooking Fire Pit – What to Look For

When it comes to choosing the right fire pit grill combo, there are a few things to be aware of – especially if it’s your first time picking one up.  Here are a few of the top things we think you should consider when comparing products.

Cooking Surface Material & Style

On typical grills, the cooking grates are made of either stainless steel, enameled porcelain, or cast iron.  You’ll want to make sure that your cooking fire pit uses one of these materials in the construction of the grate.

The reason has to do with heat distribution and consistency – these materials are proven to create consistent heat zones, which becomes even more important when cooking over an open fire.  Furthermore, inferior metals won’t last nearly as long as stainless steel, enameled porcelain, or cast iron.

Also consider whether you want a traditional grill grate, a flat top grill, or both!  Some fire pit grills only have a grill grate over the centerfire.  Others have a flat top cooking surface around the outside of the fire pit.  A few have both of these cooking styles available on the same pit.

Cooking Surface Area

It’s important to consider how many people you plan to cook for in any given setting.  Many of the smaller, portable fire pits are only suitable for cooking for about 4 people, which would make things tough if you needed to grill burgers for a party of 12.  Obviously, if you hope to have your fire pit grill be the centerpiece of your back patio, you should opt for a bigger size that will accommodate the party size you’d like.

Cooking Grate Adjustability

No two fires are the same, so when it comes to cooking over a fire it’s ideal to have an adjustable grate.  The reason is so that you can easily set your food at an ideal distance from the flame so that it cooks exactly how you want it to.

It’s not that you can’t cook on a fire pit grill without an adjustable grate, you just have to be more precise and consistent with your fire building.

Portability

Some cooking fire pits are designed to be more or less permanent fixtures on your patio – and others are designed to be taken on the go.  The permanent options are typically better suited for those looking to create an outdoor kitchen or hang out area on their patio, whereas the portable options are ideal for things like camping trips and tailgates.

Ideally, a portable option should weigh less than 40 or so pounds and come with a carrying case so that it can easily be taken with you in your vehicle.

Price

Obviously, price is a consideration any time you are comparing one product to another.  Generally speaking, high end fire pit grill combos run in the range of $500 to $2,500, depending on the configuration and setup you choose.

On the other end, a budget friendly cooking fire pit runs in the range of $100 to $300.  Anything below $100 I would begin to have serious doubts about the quality of materials used to construct the pit – remember, if you plan to cook on these units you want the grate to be at least a certain baseline level of quality.

Final Thoughts

When it comes to all around fun and memory making, it’s hard to beat gathering around a fire, pulling up some fire pit chairs, and cooking up a delicious meal.  The best cooking fire pits do just that – draw people in and deliver outstanding quality food.

We hope this resource was helpful for you in comparing fire pit grill combos – at the end of the day, there are quite a few different options out there that cater to different experiences and goals.  Hopefully, some of our suggestions above helped to clear the air on these similarities and differences.

Which pit did you end up with?  Do you like it?  Or did we omit an excellent cooking fire pit from our list?  We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments section below.

There’s nothing quite like gathering around a campfire. You can get back to nature, have a cozy little get together, and make some really nice memories. Using a portable fire pit opens up so many possibilities.

Portable fire pits are easier to light and can be freely moved around at whim. You can even opt for a fire pit grill! You don’t have to find a constant supply of firewood, there are no ground scorching flames and no messy ash to clear up afterward.

Moreover, because they are smokeless, which is good in itself, they can often be used in campsites where wood burning is banned.  Nothing is better than to pull up a fire pit chair around one of these bad boys.

We’ve found some really great portable propane fire pits, and we’ve handpicked our top favorites to show you. We’ve got some super informative reviews on those coming up very shortly.

After that, we’ve also got a handy buying guide for you that goes through everything you might want to think about before you buy.

Then we’re going to top that off with another handy section – we’re going to be looking at the answers to some of your most frequently asked questions.

Best Portable Propane Fire Pits – Our Picks

Heininger 5995 Portable Propane Outdoor Fire Pit

This one is a little more expensive than the various Outland Firebowls but comes highly recommended, with a 5 out of 5 star rating on Amazon.

It’s easy to use, all you have to do is attach the included 10-foot hose to your propane tank and light the included natural lava rock. and you’ll soon have a gorgeous ambiance for your gathering. Perfect whether you’re on the patio or the beach.

It’s a nice size with a diameter of 19 inches. And it will throw out 58,000 BTU of heat every time, thanks to all the air holes getting more oxygen into the fire. It’s also very lightweight, but unfortunately doesn’t come with a carry kit.

It’s made right here in the good old USA, and it’s also CSA approved, so you may even be able to use it during most campfire bans, but we always recommend that you check with the current fire restrictions in your area before lighting up.

Pros:

  • Highly rated
  • Easy to use

Cons:

  • Manual ignition
  • No carry kit included
  • Premium product at a premium price

Outland Firebowl 893 Deluxe

This is one of Outland Firebowl’s most popular portable propane fire pits – and we can see why.

It’s very portable, with compact measurements of just 19 inches diameter combined with 11 inches height, and weighs just 23 pounds. Perfect for taking camping.

But its small appearance does nothing to diminish its effect. With all the air holes around the sides and bottom, and the 4.4 pounds of natural lava rock included in the price, you get a gorgeous fire going. But it doesn’t just look good, it’s really warm too, throwing out an impressive 58,000 BTU of heat.

It’s in no way complicated to use, you just plug in the propane and turn the chrome dial to adjust the flame height.

The components are all top quality, it has a durable steel construction design, and to give it real longevity, it has a protective powder coating and enamel finish. The burner itself features superior stainless steel.

If you click through to the Amazon page, you will see that you can order the fire pit with a cover and carry kit included in the price, which we strongly recommend getting. To be honest we wouldn’t have included any fire pit that didn’t come with a lid, it’s an important safety measure.

But the carry kit is super handy too, the straps hold the lid in place, and there’s a handle conveniently located on the strap.

There are other accessories you can get for it, but they’re sold separately, like a natural gas conversion kit, a carry bag, or a cover for your propane tank.

The hose is nice and long, coming in at 10 feet, which is convenient and it comes pre-attached. Being able to have the propane tank cylinder a little further away from the fire pit is a nice safety measure.

We love that it’s CSA approved. That means you can use it during most campfire bans. To be on the safe side you should always check the current fire restrictions in your particular area.

Pros:

  • Top brand
  • CSA approved
  • Carry kit included

 Cons:

  • Manual ignition

Outland Firebowl 883 Mega Outdoor Propane Fire Pit

This is one of Outland Living’s other best sellers and is considerably bigger than the Outland Firebowl 893 Deluxe, coming in at 24 inches in diameter. This makes it a great choice for when you want to have a few more people around the fire.

It’s not much heavier though, weighing just 34 pounds, so it’s still very much lightweight and portable.

Other than that, it has a lot in common with the Outland Firebowl 893 Deluxe, like the already attached 10-foot-long hose to keep the propane tank out of sight, and it throws out just as much heat, coming in at 58,000 BTU.

It also has the same high-quality components, including the stainless-steel burner, the Chrome valve knob, and the protective coatings, ensuring real longevity and durability for the product.

It does however differ in the amount of natural lava rocks that come with it which comes in at 6.6 pounds, seeing as it’s a larger fire pit.

It doesn’t come with a carry kit but instead, it comes with a very durable UV and weather resistant cover to protect it from the sun and rain.

There’s no assembly to worry about and you can set it up in minutes with no tools required. And it’s also CSA approved.

Pros:

  • Top brand
  • CSA approved
  • Weather resistant cover
  • Large size – 24-inch diameter

Cons:

  • Manual ignition
  • No carry kit included
  • Premium product at a premium price

Outland Firebowl 870 Premium Outdoor Portable Propane Fire Pit

The Outland Firebowl 870 Premium has a lot in common with the Outland Firebowl 893 Deluxe we showed you earlier, in that it looks pretty similar, is the same diameter at 19 inches, same height at 11 inches.

It also has the same amount of natural lava rock, to get that lovely flickering effect, and it throws out the same amount of heat at 58,000 BTU.

There is a striking difference though (pun intended) and that’s that the 870 Premium has auto-ignition. This is great, you haven’t got to remember to pack matches, and you get a fast and simple start-up.

The 870 Premium is a little heavier than the 893 Deluxe but is still very lightweight at 25 pounds. And it does cost a little bit extra money.

It has all the other features in common with the other two Outland Firebowls, like the already attached 10-foot-long hose to keep the propane tank out of sight, and it throws out just as much heat, coming in at 58,000 BTU.

It also has the same high-quality components, including the stainless-steel burner, the Chrome valve knob, and the protective coatings, ensuring real longevity and durability for the product.

We also love that it comes with a cover and carry kit. The cover is a crucial safety measure, and the carry straps can be used to hold the lid in place. Plus, there’s a handle conveniently located on the strap.

There’s no assembly to worry about and you can set it up in minutes with no tools required. And it’s also CSA approved.

Pros:

  • Top brand
  • Auto-ignition
  • CSA approved
  • Carry kit included

Cons:

  • Premium product at a premium price

Bond Manufacturing Portable Propane Fire Pit

Here’s another great portable propane fire pit, with some great features, and it comes at a very reasonable price.

It’s available in a black finish or a metal one, and you can choose from steel or bronze. Whichever you go for, you get a lovely decorative edge, which has plenty of air holes to get all the oxygen in for your campfire.

It’s a nice size at 18.5 inches in diameter and has a nice height of 14.7 inches, which is a little higher than the ones we’ve shown you so far.

We love that it features auto-ignition. So handy if somebody forgets to bring matches. You can also adjust the height of the flames using the integrated dial, and it will throw out 54,000 BTU of heat.

We were pleased to hear that it’s safe for use on wooden decking, which means you can use it at home as well as on camping trips.

It comes complete with a 10-foot hose for the propane tank, a lid that locks securely into place, and a handle on top for easy carrying and storage. Really convenient.

There’s also a Bag of Pumice Stone Fire Filler included in the price.

Pros:

  • Auto-ignition
  • Secure lid
  • Great price
  • Safe for wood decks

 Cons:

  • A lesser known brand

Best Portable Propane Fire Pit – Buying Guide

As promised, here’s a walk-through of everything you might want to think about before you buy your portable propane fire pit.

Size

19 inches diameter seems to be the standard size for most portable propane fire pits, and it’s a good size.

But if you plan on having a lot of people gathered around your campfire, then you might be interested in something a little bigger, like our number 2 pick, the Outland Firebowl 883 Mega Outdoor Propane Fire Pit, which has a diameter of 24 inches.

Anything much bigger than that will make it much less portable, less lightweight, and harder to carry around.

Heat Output

The heat of a portable propane fire pit is measured in BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit. The higher the BTU the more heat is thrown out from the fire pit. 50,000 BTU should serve you just fine.

All of the portable propane fire pits in our top 5 picks throw out at least 50,000 BTU of heat if not more. It’s the 3 Outland Firebowls that throw out the most heat at 58,000 BTU.

Ignition Type

Lighting a portable propane fire pit is usually pretty easy if you remember to bring matches.

If, however, you’d prefer one with a matchless auto-ignition, then we can recommend our number 3 pick, the Outland Firebowl 870 Premium Outdoor Portable Propane Fire Pit.

Portability

If you’re searching for a portable propane fire pit to take on vacation with you alongside your portable grill, then the more portable it is, the better.

This doesn’t just mean that it should be small and easy to stow away, and lightweight, but ideally, it should have handles to make it easy to carry around.

Our number 1 pick, the Outland Firebowl 893 Deluxe and our number 3 pick, the Outland Firebowl 870 Premium Outdoor Portable Propane Fire Pit both come complete with a specially made carry kit.

And our number 5 pick, the Bond Manufacturing 67836 Portable Propane Fire Pit, comes with a lockable lid that features a convenient carry handle on top.

Hose Length

While a portable propane fire pit is very aesthetically pleasing and can create a beautiful ambience to your evening, the propane tank you need is less so, and many people like to keep the propane tank out of sight, with the help of a long hose.

All of the portable propane fire pits in our top 5 picks come with a 10-foot long hose (and they can all be used with a 20-pound propane tank).

Lava Rocks

Lava rocks are great for use in fire pits. They are great for distributing the fire in the fire pit, thanks to their small size and their ability to create air channels for gas to seep around.

Lava rock is maintenance free but we do recommend the rock is removed from your firepit once a year and rinsed off with clean water.

Brand

In terms of competing brands in portable propane fire pits, there is one clear winner, and that’s the Outland Living Firebowls. Not only do they sell in much greater numbers, but the customer feedback is phenomenal.

Outland Living consistently delivers high quality products, and they’ve really set the benchmark in outdoor goods. And their after sales service is impeccable.

3 out of our 5 top picks are Outlands Firebowls, and it was almost 4 out of 5. If you decide you want to go for an Outlands Firebowl but you’re struggling to decide which one, if you head over to the Amazon page for one of them, you should find a super handy comparison chart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can You Cook Over A Propane Fire Pit?

It’s perfectly safe to cook food over a propane fire pit. Almost any fire pit can be turned into a barbecue pit, allowing you to cook some great food over either a wood fire or charcoal. All you need is a grill grate, or a rotisserie.

Just to give you the heads up on that though, you may have quite a mess to clean up after the food is done.

Also, many people decide against cooking over a propane fire pit in order to keep the contents free of food drippings and grit, because this helps to help maintain a clean flame that is free of smoke.

The good news though, is that you shouldn’t need to worry about this when it comes to roasting marshmallows over a propane fire pit. Mmmm.

What’s the Best Portable Propane Fire Pit?

In case you missed it earlier, we made the Outland Firebowl 893 Deluxe. This was due to it being the perfect combination of coming from a great, well established brand, receiving a lot of really great customer feedback, and also being available at a very good and reasonable price.

The remaining products in our top 5 picks are also very good choices, depending on what particular features you’re looking for in your portable propane fire pit.

What Do You Put Under A Portable Fire Pit?

Portable propane fire fits are safe to use on grass because there’s no smoke to scorch the grass.

You can even use them on wooden decks too, because they aren’t prone to the sparking, which you might get with a wood burning fire pit.

Are Propane Fire Pits Worth It?

If you’re going to use your portable propane fire pit on a regular basis, and there’s no reason why you can’t, then a portable propane fire pit, while it may cost a big chunk of money, then it’s worth it.

They have a lot of advantages over other types of fire pits. They are safer, smokeless, produce less mess, and can create an amazing atmosphere with very little effort.

Sure if you’re camping in the woods, you could put together a wood fire instead, but this is not an option if there’s a campfire ban in place, in that instance you would need a CSA approved burner instead, like the Outland Firebowls we showed you earlier.

Grilling and the outdoors go hand in hand.  There’s something that just feels right about a campfire grill and delicious food while enjoying the great outdoors.

There are a few different ways you can make it happen – maybe you have a portable grill, or a smoker?  But there’s another option that’s very affordable and easy to manage- the campfire grill, also known as a fire pit grill.

The campfire grill unlocks a world of possibilities for your outdoor adventures.  In this article, we have a rundown of the best campfire grill choices on the market today!

What is a Campfire Grill?

Campfire grills or grill grates are designed to sit over an open fire or fire pit.  They’re ideal for camping for a few reasons.  First and foremost, building campfires is a pretty common activity for the outdoorsman.  It’s nice to leave a little bit less of a carbon footprint by cooking over your campfire, instead of making a second fire for your grill.

Campfire grill grates offer a flat cooking surface over your heat source, which does a really nice job of providing an even cooking environment for your food.

Campfire grills are also most often highly portable and relatively lightweight.  So they’re pretty easy to pack in along with the rest of your gear, and they open up a bunch of possibilities for dinner time.

The best campfire grill will allow for you to either grill foods on the grate itself with direct heat, or also use pots and pans on top of it.  Be sure to pay attention to which grates you buy, as some are not designed for direct heat grilling.

Best Campfire Grill – Our Picks & Reviews

GameMaker Open Fire Camping Grill

If you’re looking for a premium experience at the campsite, then the Gravity Open Fire Camping Grill is well worth a look.

This campfire grill is king when it comes to the capabilities it gives you cooking wise over your fire.  Most notably, it comes with two cooking surfaces – a grilling grate and a griddle.  These two cooking surfaces allow you to cook everything from a pancake breakfast to a steak dinner.

You can also easily adjust the height and angle of each cooking surface, giving you maximum flexibility when you’re working over your fire.  It also breaks down nicely for easy storage and transportation when it’s not in use.

Things We Like

  • 2 cooking surfaces included – grill grate and skillet
  • Adjustable height and rotatable
  • Easy to set up and break down
  • Durable and will last multiple seasons

Things We Don’t

  • On the pricey end of the spectrum

REDCAMP Folding Campfire Grill

If you’re looking for a budget friendly choice, check out the Redcamp Folding Campfire Grill.  It’s offered at a great price and can turn any small to medium sized fire into an outdoor grill in a snap.

Perhaps my favorite part about this grate is that it’s made of high quality 304 stainless steel.  You have to be careful with many campfire grills – many of them are made of lower quality material and actually are painted over.  You should never put food directly on these grills as paint can chip off and lead to toxins in your food.

That’s never a worry with the Redcamp.  The stainless steel grate offers a generous enough 214 square inches of cooking surface area.  Foldable legs are easy to set up and break down, and the entire unit only weighs about 3 pounds.

Things We Like

  • Extremely lightweight and portable – only around 3 pounds!
  • 304 stainless steel body and cooking grate construction
  • Very durable and safe to cook on
  • Bargain priced

Things We Don’t

  • No adjustable height mechanism

Texsport Outdoor Camping Rotisserie Grill and Spit

For those of you who enjoy an old school rotisserie cooked meal, the Texsport Heavy Duty Outdoor Camping Grill and Spit offers the versatility of a campfire grill along with a rotisserie grilling option.

Basic thumb screw adjusters allow you to control the height of both your rotisserie and grilling surface.  The downside of this campfire grill is that the grilling surface is painted and therefore not designed for direct contact with food.  So you’ll have to utilize this surface by placing cookware or cast iron pots/pans on top.

Another unique feature offered by the Texsport is twin steel side arms which are in place to help keep potted food warm.  Depending on your coffee canister, it’s also a viable place to hang your coffee to keep warm as well.

It’s an all around solid choice, especially if you see yourself utilizing a rotisserie around the campfire.  Assembly is easy enough and can be done without having to use any tools.  The entire unit weighs about 16.5 pounds, so it’s also a reasonable weight to carry around while setting up your campsite.

Things We Like

  • Rotisserie design & spit included
  • 384 square inches of cooking surface area on the main grate
  • Adjustable height for both rotisserie and grate
  • Easy set up and tear down
  • Steel side arms are ideal for keeping pots and kettles warm

Things We Don’t

  • Main cooking grate is not suitable for direct contact cooking, you have to use pots or pans

AmazonBasics Portable Outdoor Folding Campfire Grill

The Amazon Basics Portable Outdoor Folding Campfire Grill is a great bare bones choice.  It suits the needs of many and is offered at the lowest price of any product on this best campfire grill list.

It’s made of high quality welded steel but is painted so it’s not designed for direct contact grilling.  You’ll need to bring your pots and pans to utilize this grill.

But, if that doesn’t bother you this grill has a lot to offer.  It’s sturdily built and has a foldable leg design, which makes it incredibly convenient to transport and store while it’s not in use.

Last but not least, it’s offered in two different sizes.  The smaller version measures 18.5″ x 12″ for a cooking surface area of 222 square inches, whereas the larger version measures 37″ x 18″ for a cooking surface area of 665 square inches.

Things We Like

  • Entry level price point
  • Very lightweight
  • A foldable leg design means minimal storage footprint

Things We Don’t

  • No adjustable height
  • Due to the paint it’s not suitable for direct contact grilling

Adjust-A-Grill Camping Grill

The Adjust-a-Grill Camping Grill simply has all of the features that you love to see, and it’s incredibly easy to take on the go.  Design wise, it’s assembled by placing a 36″ long stake into the ground.  From there, a 15″ x 22″ stainless steel grill grate (330 square inches of cooking surface area) slides onto the stake.

You can easily adjust the height level of the grill grate thanks to a locking handle, which comes in handy when you might have built your fire a little too hot or not hot enough.  The locking mechanism is strong enough to hold up lots of food and heavy dishes or full coffee pots.

Installation is easy, and the entire setup process can be completed in less than a minute.  When it’s time to pack up, the grate can easily be washed and stored with the stake in a heavy duty nylon bag for storage and transport.

The last feature of the Stromberg Stake and Grille that we love is the presence of up-turned edges on the grill grate.  It’s a nice safety measure that ensures your rogue hot dogs or sausages won’t roll off of the grate even if the grate was set up at a slight angle.

Things We Like

  • Adjustable height stake and grate design
  • High quality stainless steel material used for construction
  • Heavy duty nylon bag for easy storage and transport
  • Large grilling grate with 330 square inches of cooking surface area
  • Up-turned grate edges
  • Direct heat grilling & also will support cast iron pots and pans

Things We Don’t

  • Relatively speaking, the price is above average for a campfire grill

What to Look For In the Best Campfire Grill

When comparing different campfire grills, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and not know which features are actually important, and which are just marketing nonsense.  Here’s our quick no-nonsense list of the features you should look for when comparing one best campfire grill to another.

Mounting Style

Some campfire grills are designed to be stand alone and some are mounted on a stake.  Freestanding ones are probably a tiny bit more user friendly, but lack the ability to adjust the distance your grates rest above your fire.

Stake mounted grates on the other hand are generally more versatile, as you can easily adjust how high and far away they are set over your fire.

Generally speaking, we definitely prefer stake mounted grates simply because they offer more versatility – but they typically cost more.  So if you’re on a budget or don’t mind a simple and straightforward grate, then a freestanding grate could be a great fit for you.

Direct Surface Grilling

Pay attention to whether or not the grate is safe for direct surface grilling.  You’d be surprised to know that many campfire grates actually aren’t safe for food to cook directly on them.  The reason is typically because a cheaper type of metal is used for the grates which are painted during the construction process.

Even though the paint might not be dangerous per se, you most definitely don’t want it coming off of your grate and getting into your food.  It’s gross at a minimum and potentially toxic.

Painted grates are fine, you just need to understand that you’ll be cooking your food in pots or pans that sit on top of your grate.

If you prefer the luxury of direct cooking, make sure your grates are food safe – and most preferably made of stainless steel or cast iron.

Size

This might sound like a “duh” thing to bring up, but size is important.  Think about how many campers you’ll typically be cooking for, and ensure that you have enough grilling surface area to accommodate.

It’s not a big deal if you have to make a few batches of hot dogs or burgers, but I promise the last thing you want to do all day is be on grill duty while everyone else enjoys the outdoors.

Price

This one might also sound obvious, but think about your budget.  For reference, you can get an extremely cheap freestanding, non-direct grilling grate for around $20.  On the more expensive end for premium campfire grills, expect to pay closer to $200.  There also are many options in between those two price points!

Final Thoughts

I hope this round up of the best campfire grills has been beneficial to you!  Camping and cooking go hand in hand as far as I’m concerned, and well cooked campfire food is sure to make a great meal and great memories.

Which campfire grill did you end up with?  We’d love to hear which one you got in the comments section below!

You probably want your fire pit to be the focus of your backyard. Your friends and family can spend a lot of time here- cooking, sitting by the fire, and making memories. However, it helps if you have comfortable seating for them.

Every fire pit should have a quality furniture set to help your guests enjoy their visit. There are a ton of options, making it hard to choose. You will not want to pick the first random set of chairs that you find on sale, as they might not last you very long.

If you want to check out the best cooking fire pit, you’ll really understand why chilling next to the fire is one of the greatest things ever.

Best Fire Pit Chairs – Our Top Picks

Polywood Adirondack Chairs

These chairs come in just about every color imaginable – meaning you can easily use them with any decorating theme you already have. The first Adirondack chair was created in 1903 by Thomas Lee. He wanted a durable chair that was still comfortable to sit on, which led to this design.

Since then, many companies have entered the scene with variations in color and materials used. Polywood uses a proprietary material, which is very durable. It requires little maintenance, so you can expect it to last you much longer than wood would. The chair will only need to be lightly cleaned here and there.

As an added benefit, the brand says that the chair uses a fade-resistant material. That way, you can be certain that the color you decide on will stay forever.

Pros

  • Comfortable, recognizable design
  • UV color protection
  • Made from recycled materials

Cons

  • Don’t fold without disassembly
  • A bit pricey

Achla Designs Curved Backless Bench

Bench seating is comfortable and helps everyone feel connected to one another around the fire. This option is curved, allowing you to better place them around your pit. Bench seats are becoming more and more popular, so you will want to take advantage of this new trend.

The curved shape of the bench lets it fit around any round fire pit comfortable. However, if you have a square pit, you might want to use straight benches. That way, your space will feel a bit more balanced.

The benches are backless, making them feel more open. They work perfectly for your gatherings because of this feature.

Pros

  • Easy to space evenly
  • Keeps everyone close to the fire
  • Keeps people from feeling crowded
  • Creates a matching theme and balance

Cons

  • Sold individually
  • Likely need assembled

Lakeland Mills Log Lounge Chair

These rustic chairs look perfect beside a fire. They are comfortable and have a unique design. Plus, the price is fair for the high-quality that you get with your order. The shape of the chair is why it got a high ranking, however.

The design of the Lakeland Mills Lounge Chair makes this chair very comfortable to relax in. That way, you and your guests can spend a nice evening outside. We also appreciated the natural color and texture of the wood material, which was chosen for its benefits.

The wood, which is cedar, repels insects and is resistant to outdoor conditions. You can feel confident that this purchase would last you a very long time.

The biggest downside to this item is that you need to stain it yourself, so it comes in pieces. However, assembling and staining the chair could be a nice weekend project outside. The chair looks complicated, but many users said that it was easy enough to assemble with the given directions, so you do not have to feel overwhelmed.

Pros

  • Great price
  • Comfortable
  • Made from a durable, resistant wood

Cons

  • Needs to be stained and assembled before use

Giantex 4 Folding Chairs

If you need to provide a lot of seating, this 4 pack of chairs can be helpful. To put it into perspective, you get 4 for a similar price to the log lounge chair we discussed above- which would be a good value for the price.

Plus, these chairs can fold easily, which makes them easier to store or move around the yard. If you enjoy camping, you could take them with you- without sacrificing much of your needed car space.

The chairs are pretty comfortable, according to users. Since they are easy to move, your guests can place them as far or as close to the fire pit as they want- allowing them to be more comfortable.

The chairs are made from an elastic material that is durable and breathable. The brand says that you can sit in them comfortably for a long time, since that material adjusts to the shape of your body. Overall, the chairs are convenient and cozy.

You will probably not want to leave them outside all of the time, just take them out when you need them. Users had some issues with pieces rusting.

Pros

  • Great value
  • Easy to transport and store
  • Made from breathable and stretchy elastic

Cons

  • Bolts may rust if left outside too long

GCI Outdoor Fire Pit Rocker

You can get one of these fire pit rockers for a great price. They are portable and fold easily. Even if you are not a fan of the design, these chairs are very convenient and comfortable to have around any fire pit.

While the chair is very light, the steel frame allows it to hold up to 250 pounds, which is good for many people. The best parts? It can rock gently and comes with a cup holder. Users mentioned that it was very relaxing to sit in and made their time by the fire more enjoyable and comfortable.

It also has plenty more uses. You can take it with you on a trip, for camping, or for hanging out on the beach. It would also be great for fishing and more.

Pros

  • Cup holder
  • Rocking feature
  • Lightweight and easy to fold up

Cons

  • Low to the ground
  • Material is prone to tears

Keter Rio 3 Piece Resin Wicker Furniture Set

This furniture set includes 2 resin wicker chairs. The material they are made from is durable and looks like woven rattan. You also get a matching table with your order. We appreciated the small table, since it would be perfect for setting snacks and drinks on while at your fire. Plus, it looks nice on your patio or other areas of your yard.

The set only comes in one color, which the brand calls “whiskey brown”. It is a pleasant, dark, and neutral color- which would match just about anything you already own. Users said that the chairs felt stable on the ground and they loved the design.

However, you will need to put in a little bit of time to maintain your new furniture set. The company recommends that you clean the chairs with some water to remove dirt. Then you use a gentle detergent and rinse the material off well. Finally, make sure to dry them with a towel.

That process can be time consuming, but it will need to be done if you want to keep your new chairs and table looking nice.

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Easy to build
  • Durable and stable design

Cons

  • Need to be cleaned
  • Require time consuming maintenance

Lifetime Faux Wood Adirondack Chair

These chairs seem to go on sale often, so you may be able to score a solid deal. They also come in a wide range of colors! Overall, they are pretty comfortable and made from the same material as our number 1 pick.

This material is known as Polywood. It resembles real wood but is more resistant to water, making it perfect for outdoor use. The material will also resist color fade, as it has UV resistance. Plus, it will not chip like paint.

However, we could not rank this option higher. The chair is very difficult to build. If you want to try it, we recommend that you read the instructions thoroughly a few times. It could also be worth looking up a video guide online.

That being said, this chair requires no maintenance. Simply rinse it with water if you feel it needs cleaned. It is worth noting that it is a bit pricey when not on sale and is very heavy, weighing 300 pounds.

Pros

  • Comes in many different colors
  • Made of Polywood
  • Easy to clean
  • Comfortable

Cons

  • Frustrating to assemble

Lakeland Mills Cedar Log Loveseat

If you decide to order the brand’s log lounge chair, you could organize a rustic set. The log loveseat is also made from cedar, which is highly resistant to insects. Users enjoyed the curved shape of the arms, which made sitting on it more comfortable.

The bench is a bit heavy, weighing about 60 pounds. The pieces are not assembled and need to be stained before you use them outside. The process does not take too long, but can be complicated if you have never done a project like this before. The company does have an online tutorial that you can follow, which helps a lot.

It is worth noting that users said it changes color in the rain. You will want to keep it dry as much as you can, if you do not want that to happen. Overall, we think the design is pleasant and the chair is pretty affordable. It would be fun to sit next to your guests and cook over the fire.

  • Made from insect repelling cedar

The Patio Sense chair is perfect for any type of weather and has a fun, stylish design. The chair is pretty low maintenance to clean and is made from a stainless steel frame. That keeps it light, yet durable.

These chairs are great for sitting around a fire pit, but also look great on your patio or deck. They are easy to move around as you need to and are not too hard to assemble. However, users mentioned that the bolts have a tendency to rust. You will want to keep them dry when you can.

Cons

  • Bolts tend to rust

HAPPYGRILL 2 Piece Adirondack Armchair

However, users have mentioned that they are not the best quality available. Some chairs have scratches or other marks on them.

Fire Pit Chairs Buyer’s Guide

If you are considering buying the best chairs for your fire pit, you will want to think about a few different things first. By doing so, you can be confident that you got the right product for you and your loved ones to use around the fire.

This general guide should help you out, so be sure to stick around!

Comfort

You should always consider comfort first. Especially if you are going to be spending a lot of time sitting in these chairs with your guests. Their design and patterns will not matter when they are too uncomfortable to sit on.

You will probably want a chair that comes with some cushions. If they do not, it would be a good idea to add a few of your own.

Function

Next, you want to be sure that the chair suits the functions you need it to. Will it be primarily a fire pit chair or will you also want to use it for camping or other activities? Will the chair sit on your deck or patio most of the time?

You probably want to ensure the chair is great for hanging out around a fire (or portable propane fire pit) at night, but also good for sitting outside and relaxing on your own.

You might also consider a chair that has more than one purpose in mind. Maybe the chair folds back for lounging or it has a cup holder for your drinks.

Maintenance

Outdoor chairs need to be able to withstand damage from the elements. If they are in the sun for long periods, you also want to be sure that they will not fade. It helps if you have an awning or porch over your outdoor furniture, if you plan on leaving them outside 100% of the time.

Some chairs will need to be cleaned more often than others. You will want to look into how much time it takes to wash them. Usually, you will want to get a chair that is simple to clean.

Storage and Transportation

Many people also like their chairs to be easy to move around and store. Often, they will go with you on various outdoor trips, so it is helpful if they are lightweight and can fold up.

However, if you do not plan on taking your fire pit chairs anywhere, you can always opt for the heavier models. Just remember- you need to be able to carry it to the backyard and set it up.

Overall Quality

You will want to check out reviews online to determine if the chairs are a good enough quality. They should be able to last you many years, especially if you are paying good money for them.

Design

The design will also be up to your preferences. You can choose the size and shape, plus what colors you want. You will want to pick a style that matches your space, so you can create a nice layout for your visitors.

Overall, you will want to find a comfortable chair that suits your needs. There are plenty on this list that you can choose from, so we are confident that you can find a nice option for your yard here.

What Else to Consider

Before you buy your chairs, make sure that you consider how you are going to arrange the furniture. It helps if you look up the measurements of the items. You will want to take this additional step to ensure that you have enough space available for your new fire pit chairs.

You will also want to arrange the furniture to create a space where conversations can happen. That means that you want people to be able to face one another without furniture being between them.

If you want, you can also use a mixture of different types of furniture at your fire pit. You could have a few arm chairs and maybe a backless bench and some small tables. That way, people have more options for where they can sit. People tend to move around at gatherings, so you want to give them the choice of where to sit when you can.

Finally, you will want to consider the weather your area experiences the most often. Will your guests be uncomfortable on a hard chair or will it be too cold? You will likely want to add some cushions to your outdoor chairs.
